Why do Disability Workers need it?

As a disability support worker, you give your clients the opportunity to experience a more satisfying and fulfilling lifestyle. You help them perform their daily activities by assisting them to participate in community activities and their favourite hobbies. Your clients put their trust in you, relying on you to help them live their best lives.

Ensuring you have the right insurances in place as a disability support worker is vital to your professional wellbeing. Whether you are operating as an individual or as a professional paid carer, including the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants, you are exposed to risks every day which could result in a costly claim.

Did you know?

Under the NDIS Terms of Business for Registered Providers, participants are required to maintain an adequate level of insurance including Public Liability insurance and Professional Indemnity insurance.

Compare tailored insurance packages from DUAL Australia and Vero, that help meet the needs of disability support workers (including NDIS participants). They provide protection and peace of mind from unexpected challenges, where a claim could not only leave you out of pocket for thousands of dollars, but it could destroy your reputation too.

Insurance for Disability Workers

The tailored Disability Support Worker’s package includes cover for Professional Indemnity and Public Liability insurance.

Professional Indemnity*

An essential policy that will protect you against the financial loss for claims arising from acts of negligence, errors or omissions which involve a breach of your professional duty. An example of a claim for negligence could be failing to access a risk accurately, incorrectly administrating prescribed medications and emergency procedures, or failing to provide agreed supervision of your client in public spaces.

Your Professional Indemnity policy will also cover:

  • Legal and defence  costs, even if not found liable you are covered for the associated costs of defending yourself
  • Court attendance costs
  • Compensation that may be awarded to your client

Additionally, there is an option to include ‘run-off cover’ which will provide protection against claims made against you after you cease working as a disability worker.

Please note: the policy does not cover procedures that would require a medical or nursing qualification.

Public Liability Insurance*

Every day you work closely with your clients and members of the public, making Public Liability insurance an important type of insurance for disability support workers. Public Liability insurance is designed to provide protection for you and your Disability Services business in the event a patient, supplier or a member of the public is injured or sustains property damage as a result of your negligent business activities.

A public liability claim could arise from forgetting to clean a spill on the floor, causing someone to slip and injure themselves or damaging your client’s property while it is in your care.

*As with any insurance, cover will be subject to the terms, conditions and exclusions contained in the policy wording. The information contained on this web page is general only and should not be relied upon as advice.
